Understanding Opening-Closing Ranks Across General, SEBC, SC, ST, EWS and TFWS Categories
Unlike a fixed pass mark, the ACPC cutoff for any college-branch combination is a dynamic figure that emerges only after each counselling round closes, based on how many seats are available and how many eligible candidates choose that option. The cutoff is expressed as an Opening Rank (OR) — the best (lowest numerical) merit rank that got a seat in that round — and a Closing Rank (CR) — the last, lowest-priority rank that still secured a seat before the branch filled up.
DA-IICT ICT/CS
Rank ~1-85 (Open)
Most competitive branch statewide
Nirma Univ. CSE
Rank ~150-450 (Open)
Top private university choice
LDCE Computer Engg
Rank ~250-650 (Open)
Leading government college
General Eligibility
45% HSC (40% Reserved)
Minimum Board % to register
ACPC counselling reserves seats across multiple categories — General/Open, SEBC (OBC), SC, ST, EWS, and TFWS (Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme) — each with its own separate merit ranking and cutoff. Because the applicant pool size differs sharply between categories, the numerical closing rank for, say, SEBC candidates at a given college-branch will typically be a much larger number than the Open category rank for the same seat, since a larger pool competes within a comparatively smaller reserved seat quota, and vice versa in some specific high-demand branches.
| College / Branch | Open Category | SEBC (OBC) | EWS | TFWS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DA-IICT Gandhinagar — ICT/CS Minor | 1 - 85 | 250 - 450 | 110 - 160 | 30 - 65 |
| Nirma University — CSE | 150 - 450 | 1,100 - 1,800 | 500 - 750 | 180 - 320 |
| LDCE Ahmedabad — Computer Engg. | 250 - 650 | 1,400 - 2,200 | 700 - 1,050 | 280 - 480 |
| VGEC Chandkheda — Computer Engg. | 1,100 - 1,800 | 3,000 - 4,200 | 1,800 - 2,500 | 800 - 1,200 |
| VGEC Chandkheda — Information Technology | 1,800 - 2,800 | 4,500 - 6,000 | 2,600 - 3,400 | 1,200 - 1,800 |
These ranges are indicative, drawn from recent-cycle trends aggregated by third-party sources rather than a single official confirmed table, and can shift meaningfully year to year based on total applicants, seat-matrix changes, and how many students accept versus decline their allotment. Government colleges' Civil and Mechanical branches, by contrast, typically remain far more accessible, often closing well beyond rank 10,000-20,000 even in Round 1.
ACPC runs a mock round followed by multiple real allotment rounds (commonly Round 1, Round 2, Round 3, and a final special/mop-up round). Cutoffs for the same branch typically loosen (the closing rank number increases) in later rounds as higher-merit candidates who got better offers elsewhere vacate seats, though highly sought branches at DA-IICT, Nirma, and top government colleges can also tighten slightly if additional strong candidates newly enter that round's choice list.
When two or more candidates end up with an identical composite merit percentile, ACPC applies a pre-defined tie-breaking hierarchy — commonly prioritizing higher GUJCET marks, then higher Class 12 marks in specific subjects, and as a final resort, date of birth (older candidates sometimes prioritized) — the exact hierarchy is specified in the counselling information brochure each year.
Because a single year's cutoff can be skewed by one-off factors — a sudden spike in applicants, a new college entering the system, or an unusually easy/hard GUJCET paper affecting percentile distribution — serious applicants should look at closing ranks across at least three recent years for their target branch before finalizing a choice-filling strategy, rather than anchoring only to the most recent year's figures.
