Understanding Rank Variation by Institute, Branch, Category & Gender-Neutral/Female Pools
JEE Advanced cutoffs are expressed as opening and closing All India Ranks (AIR) for each specific institute-branch-category-gender combination, published by JoSAA after each counselling round. These cutoffs fluctuate year to year based on total seat availability, the exact number of qualified candidates, and shifting branch preferences among top-ranking students.

Among the 23 IITs, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi consistently command the lowest (most competitive) closing ranks across nearly all branches, closely followed by IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Kharagpur — often referred to collectively as the "older, more established IITs." The newer IITs (established post-2008, such as IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Ropar, and others) have closing ranks that, while still highly competitive by any national standard, are generally somewhat more accessible than the oldest IITs for equivalent branches.
| Branch Category | Relative Competitiveness Across IITs | General Observation |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science & Engineering | Extremely High (Lowest Closing Ranks) | Consistently the most sought-after branch at every IIT |
| Electrical Engineering | Very High | Strong demand, especially at older IITs |
| Mechanical / Civil / Chemical Engineering | Moderate-High | Competitive but meaningfully more accessible than CS/EE at most IITs |
| Newer/Interdisciplinary Programs (e.g., Engineering Physics, Mathematics & Computing) | High and Rising | Growing demand as industry recognition increases |
Closing ranks vary substantially across the General/Open category and reserved categories (OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS), since each category has its own separate rank list and proportionally reserved seats as mandated by central government reservation policy. A candidate's category-specific closing rank for a given institute-branch combination is typically numerically much higher (i.e., less restrictive in absolute AIR terms within that category) than the General category closing rank for the same combination, reflecting the smaller competing pool within each reserved category.
Since the introduction of supernumerary female seats, JoSAA publishes separate cutoff ranks for the Gender-Neutral pool (open to all candidates) and the Female-only pool (additional seats specifically for female candidates), and female candidates can be admitted through whichever pool offers a more favorable outcome for their rank and preferences.
• Total number of candidates qualifying JEE Advanced and their raw score distribution, which shifts based on that year's paper difficulty.
• Any changes in total seat matrix across IITs (occasional new branch introductions or capacity adjustments).
• Shifting aggregate preferences — for instance, growing interest in emerging fields like Data Science or AI-related branches can pull ranks closer to traditional CS/EE cutoffs over time.
IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi consistently have among the lowest (most competitive) closing ranks across most branches, particularly for Computer Science and Electrical Engineering.
Yes, each category (General/Open, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS) has its own separate rank list with correspondingly different closing ranks, reflecting proportional seat reservation for each category.
It refers to supernumerary seats created specifically for female candidates beyond the standard seat matrix, published as a separate cutoff rank list alongside the standard Gender-Neutral pool.
Cutoffs shift based on that year's total qualified candidate pool, paper difficulty, any changes in the overall seat matrix, and evolving branch preference trends among top-ranking candidates.
