Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) • Conducted by Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs - JAB on Rotational Basis)
Complete Directory of IITs, IISc, IISERs, RGIPT & IIPE With Program Highlights
JEE Advanced ranks are accepted by a well-defined set of premier institutions: all 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, IISc Bangalore (for its B.S. Research program), select IISERs, and specialized institutes RGIPT and IIPE. Each IIT, despite sharing the common "IIT" brand, has developed its own distinct character, regional strengths, and areas of academic specialization over the decades since its founding.

India's IIT system expanded significantly after 2008, adding institutes including IIT Hyderabad, IIT Indore, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Ropar, IIT Patna, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Mandi, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Varanasi (IIT-BHU, actually older under a different lineage), IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati, IIT Dharwad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu, and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad (a former mining-focused institute converted to full IIT status in 2016). These institutes, while newer, have rapidly built strong placement records and research output, often with a particular focus on interdisciplinary and emerging technology programs.
| Institute | Program Accepted Through JEE Advanced | Distinct Feature |
|---|---|---|
| IISc Bangalore | B.S. Research Program | India's top-ranked research institute; research-intensive undergraduate track |
| IISERs (Pune, Kolkata, Mohali, Bhopal, Thiruvananthapuram, Berhampur, Tirupati) | BS-MS Dual Degree Programs | Strong basic sciences focus alongside engineering-adjacent options |
| RGIPT | B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering & related fields | Specialized petroleum and energy sector focus |
| IIPE | B.Tech in Petroleum, Energy Systems & related fields | Focused specifically on petroleum and energy engineering |
While older IITs generally carry stronger brand recognition and typically see higher demand (and hence more competitive closing ranks) for equivalent branches, many newer IITs now offer comparable or, in select specific programs, even superior faculty expertise and research infrastructure in niche areas, making a purely "older is always better" heuristic overly simplistic. Candidates are advised to research specific department strengths, faculty research areas, and recent placement trends for their intended branch at each institute under consideration, rather than relying solely on the overall institute's age or general reputation.
There are 23 IITs in India, and all of them accept JEE Advanced ranks for undergraduate admission through the JoSAA counselling process.
IISc Bangalore, select IISERs, RGIPT, and IIPE also accept JEE Advanced ranks for their respective undergraduate programs.
Not necessarily; while older IITs generally have stronger overall brand recognition and higher demand, many newer IITs have built strong reputations and research infrastructure in specific departments, so candidates should research specific branch strengths rather than relying solely on an institute's founding year.
IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi are generally considered to have the most competitive and sought-after Computer Science programs, consistently commanding the lowest closing ranks nationally.
