General Guidance on How Round 1 Versus Round 2 Competition Differs
The following is general guidance based on recurring historical patterns, not an official IKGPTU statement. Because IKGPTU splits its admission process across two fundamentally different merit criteria, 'competition level' looks very different depending on which round a candidate is evaluating.
Round 1 Competition
High for Top Colleges
JEE Main rank-driven, CSE most contested
Round 2 Competition
Comparatively Lower
Fills residual seats via board %
Most Competitive Institutes
GNDEC Ludhiana, BBSBEC
Established, well-placed colleges
Most Accessible
Newer Private Affiliated Colleges
Wider rank/percentage range admitted
Within Round 1, Computer Science Engineering and its variants (AI & ML, Data Science) at the more established institutes — particularly GNDEC Ludhiana and BBSBEC Fatehgarh Sahib — draw by far the heaviest competition, with reported closing JEE Main ranks in some categories falling in a few-thousand-to-low-lakh range for the most sought branches, while core branches at newer or less established colleges remain considerably more accessible.
Round 2's board-percentage-based pool is generally smaller and less intensely competitive than Round 1's JEE-Main pool, since it only opens for seats that remain unfilled after Round 1 — however, popular branches at well-regarded colleges can still see meaningful competition even within this second pool if many high-percentage board candidates target the same limited remaining seats.
By the time seats reach the direct-college-admission stage, they are typically concentrated at less-in-demand branches or newer, smaller private colleges, making this stage the most accessible tier of the entire IKGPTU process — though naturally with correspondingly less name recognition and more variable infrastructure/placement quality.
Students should benchmark their expectations separately for each round: a JEE Main rank that would be uncompetitive for top NITs can still be very workable for a strong IKGPTU-affiliated college in Round 1, and even students without any JEE Main attempt retain a genuine, non-trivial path into Punjab's engineering college network through Round 2.
Computer Science Engineering and its emerging variants (AI & ML, Data Science) consistently draw the highest demand at virtually every IKGPTU-affiliated institute, mirroring national engineering admission trends, while core branches (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) remain considerably more accessible across the wider affiliated-college network, including in Round 2.
The relative size and competitiveness of Round 2 depends heavily on how many candidates in a given year hold a usable JEE Main score versus how many rely entirely on board percentage — in years with higher JEE Main participation among Punjab students, Round 2's applicant pool (and therefore its effective cutoff percentages) may shift compared to years with lower participation.
Given the wide spread of institute quality and the dual-criterion admission structure, IKGPTU's overall system is genuinely capable of placing the large majority of serious, reasonably hardworking Punjab engineering aspirants into some workable seat — the strategic task is matching ambitions to the correct tier of institute rather than fixating only on the small number of most-discussed, most-competitive options.
Because much publicly available IKGPTU cutoff and competition data comes from third-party aggregators compiling official round-wise PDFs, students should always cross-reference any striking or unusual figure against the original official document hosted on ptu.ac.in before treating it as a reliable planning input.
The combination of a nationally standardized Round 1 criterion and a locally familiar Round 2 criterion gives IKGPTU's overall competition landscape a genuinely dual character worth understanding fully before forming expectations about any specific institute or branch.
It is also worth noting that difficulty in securing a seat is not the same as difficulty in succeeding academically once admitted; a less competitive branch or institute within the IKGPTU network can still provide a genuinely strong education for a motivated student, particularly when paired with active participation in projects, internships, and placement preparation beyond classroom coursework alone.
Students should also factor in their own risk tolerance when interpreting this analysis: a candidate prioritizing certainty of some admission may lean toward more accessible choices earlier in their list, while a candidate willing to wait through multiple rounds for a specific preferred outcome may structure their list more aggressively toward reach options.
Over multiple admission cycles, the overall shape of this competitive landscape, concentrated demand at a handful of flagship institutes and branches, wide accessibility elsewhere, has remained a consistent and dependable pattern for planning purposes.
