No Separate Exam — Allotment Mechanics, Choice Filling, and Round Logic Explained
Since CSAB is a counselling and seat-allocation process, not an examination, there is no "pattern" in the conventional sense of sections, questions, or marking schemes. Instead, understanding CSAB means understanding its choice-filling and allotment algorithm, which mirrors JoSAA's methodology but operates on a smaller, vacant-seat-only pool.
Basis
JEE Main Rank
No Separate Test
Rounds
2 Special Rounds
+ NEUT Round
Choice Filling
Fresh List Required
Institute-Branch Combinations
Response Options
Freeze/Float/Slide
Or Withdraw
CSAB applies the same merit-cum-preference logic used by JoSAA: in each round, the system processes candidates strictly in order of JEE Main rank, allotting each candidate the highest-ranked available choice from their saved preference list that still has a vacant seat at that point in the process. A candidate's final allotment in any round depends on their rank relative to all other registered candidates and the live seat availability at the moment of processing.
After registration, each candidate fills and locks a ranked preference list of institute-branch combinations drawn exclusively from the published vacant-seat matrix. Unlike JoSAA, where candidates can include virtually any IIT/NIT/IIIT/GFTI-branch combination within their eligibility, CSAB choice lists are inherently limited to whatever seats remain vacant at that specific point in the cycle — meaning the available combination pool literally shrinks with each successive round as seats get filled.
| Response Option | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Freeze | Accept the allotted seat as final; do not participate in further rounds |
| Float | Accept the seat for now, but remain in consideration for a better preference in the next round |
| Slide | Accept the seat, but seek only a better branch within the same institute in the next round |
| Withdraw | Decline participation entirely and exit the CSAB process (subject to applicable refund rules) |
Because each Special Round only works with seats that remain vacant after the previous round's allotments and responses, a candidate's Round 2 choice list is necessarily drawn from a smaller, updated vacant-seat matrix than Round 1 — some combinations available in Round 1 will no longer exist in Round 2 once filled, while other new vacancies may open up if Round 1 allottees withdraw or fail verification.
Because there is no test, CSAB has no equivalent of exam-day reporting time, exam center, or invigilation rules. The closest equivalent "logistics" candidates must handle are the online choice-filling deadline and the physical/online reporting requirement at their allotted institute after accepting a seat.
| Aspect | CSAB Special Round | CSAB-NEUT |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible Candidates | Any JoSAA-eligible JEE Main candidate | Domiciled candidates from 8 NE states + select UTs only |
| Seat Pool | General vacant-seat matrix | Separate reserved NEUT quota seats |
| Rounds | Special Round 1 & 2 | Typically 1-2 rounds, run in parallel timeline |
| Institutes | NITs, IIITs, GFTIs | NITs, IIITs, GFTIs (NEUT quota seats specifically) |
The matrix entering CSAB is calculated by subtracting all seats confirmed (frozen and reported) through JoSAA's final round from each institute's total sanctioned intake for that branch and category. This live recalculation happens again after each CSAB round, since new vacancies can emerge from withdrawals or failed verifications even within the CSAB cycle itself.
No, CSAB uses your existing JEE Main rank; there is no separate test, question paper, or exam-day procedure.
It follows a merit-cum-preference logic — candidates are processed strictly by JEE Main rank, receiving the best available choice from their list that still has a vacant seat at that point.
Freeze locks in your seat permanently; Float keeps you eligible for a better institute/branch in the next round; Slide keeps you eligible only for a better branch within your current institute.
