Central Seat Allocation Board • Conducted by Central Seat Allocation Board (Rotational NIT under Ministry of Education)
Vacant Seat Display, Registration, Special Rounds, and Reporting Windows
CSAB's entire calendar is compressed into roughly three to four weeks, running immediately after JoSAA's final round concludes, typically spanning late July through late August. Because the whole process is designed to finalize admissions before the academic session begins, deadlines are tight and candidates must track each stage closely.

Within days of JoSAA's final round and seat-freeze deadline, CSAB publishes the provisional and then final vacant-seat matrix — a detailed, institute-wise and branch-wise count of every seat left unfilled across NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Candidates should study this matrix carefully before registering, since it directly shows which institute-branch combinations have realistic availability.
Registration for CSAB Special Rounds opens shortly after the vacant matrix is displayed and typically remains open for about a week. All candidates — whether returning from JoSAA or entirely new — must register afresh and build a brand-new choice list specific to CSAB's vacant-seat matrix; JoSAA choice lists do not carry over automatically.
CSAB conducts exactly two Special Rounds (occasionally supplemented by a further mop-up round in some years), each following the familiar allotment-response-reporting cycle: seat allotment is published, candidates must respond within a short window (freeze, float, slide, or withdraw), followed by document verification and fee payment for those confirming a seat.
Running on an overlapping or immediately sequential timeline, the CSAB-NEUT round specifically allocates reserved seats for candidates domiciled in the North-Eastern states and specified Union Territories, using the same JEE Main rank basis but a separate reserved seat pool.
Candidates who accept and freeze a seat in either Special Round must physically report to their allotted institute (or complete the prescribed online reporting process) within the specified deadline, typically in late August, shortly before the academic session begins in most NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
Because CSAB operates after JoSAA has already consumed the bulk of the admission calendar, and because the academic session for most NITs/IIITs/GFTIs must begin on schedule, CSAB's entire registration-to-reporting cycle is deliberately compressed into under a month, leaving little room for delayed decision-making by candidates.
| Stage | Typical Timing |
|---|---|
| JoSAA Final Round Concludes | Mid-to-Late July |
| Vacant Seat Matrix Published | Late July |
| CSAB Registration & Choice Filling Opens | Late July |
| Choice Filling & Locking Closes | Early August |
| Special Round 1 Allotment & Reporting | Early-Mid August |
| Special Round 2 Allotment & Reporting | Mid August |
| CSAB-NEUT Round | Mid-to-Late August (overlapping) |
| Final Physical Reporting at Institute | Late August |
| Academic Session Begins | Late August / Early September |
Candidates should treat each of these windows as tight and non-negotiable — missing a response deadline in either Special Round typically results in forfeiture of that seat offer, with no guarantee of another chance in the same cycle.
CSAB registration typically opens in late July, immediately after JoSAA completes its final round, with the entire process concluding by late August.
CSAB conducts two Special Rounds (Special Round 1 and Special Round 2), alongside a separate CSAB-NEUT round for North-Eastern/UT candidates.
Yes, CSAB requires completely fresh registration and a new choice list; JoSAA registration or choices do not carry over automatically.
