Vellore Institute of Technology Engineering Entrance Examination • Conducted by Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT)
Understanding the Multi-Phase Application, Slot-Booking, and Multi-Day Exam Structure
VITEEE follows a distinctly longer application cycle than most engineering entrance exams, with registration opening as early as late October or November of the preceding year and remaining open for roughly five months, closing only in late March or early April. This extended window reflects VIT's effort to accommodate its very large, geographically dispersed candidate base well ahead of the multi-day exam itself.
| Event | Typical Window / Historical Pattern |
|---|---|
| Application Opens | Late October / Early November |
| Application Closes (Regular) | Late March to Mid April |
| Slot Booking (OTBS) Opens | Shortly after application closes, mid April |
| Admit Card Release | A few days after slot booking, late April |
| VITEEE Exam Window | Late April to early May, spread over multiple days |
| Result & Rank Announcement | First to second week of May |
| Phase-Wise Counselling | Mid May through June |
Given VIT's enormous applicant pool of well over 1.5-2 lakh candidates, conducting the exam in a single day/shift would require an impractically large number of simultaneous CBT centers. Instead, VIT spreads the exam across multiple days (historically ranging from about 5 to 10 days) with multiple shifts each day, and uses statistical normalization to ensure candidates who take an easier slot are not unfairly advantaged over those who take a harder one.
Unlike most exams where the conducting body assigns a fixed date and time, VITEEE's OTBS portal allows candidates to actively select their preferred date and shift from the remaining available options. Because slots are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, candidates who book early get a wider choice of dates and cities, while those who book later may be restricted to whatever slots remain — making it important not to delay this step once it opens.
Once results are declared, VIT typically allows a short gap before counselling begins, during which candidates are expected to review their rank and start researching campus/branch options. VITEEE's counselling itself is conducted in phases rather than the round-based system used by many other exams, with each phase opening access to a specific rank band, moving progressively toward lower-ranked candidates in later phases.
Registration typically opens in late October or November of the preceding year and stays open for about five months, closing around late March to mid April.
Candidates themselves choose their preferred exam date and shift through the OTBS (Online Test Booking System) portal, which opens after the application window closes, on a first-come-first-served basis.
Because of the very large number of candidates, VIT spreads the exam across multiple days and shifts to manage CBT center capacity, applying score normalization to ensure fairness across different slots.
Results are typically declared within one to two weeks of the exam window closing, usually by the first or second week of May.
