Telangana State Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test (TG EAPCET) • Conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Hyderabad on behalf of TGCHE
State-Level Gateway to Engineering, Agriculture & Pharmacy Colleges Across Telangana
TG EAPCET (Telangana State Engineering, Agriculture and Pharmacy Common Entrance Test) 2026 is the primary state-level entrance examination for admission to undergraduate Engineering, Agriculture, and Pharmacy programs across Telangana. It is organized by the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) and conducted on its behalf by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (JNTUH).
The exam has gone through two rounds of renaming in recent years. Originally the "M" in its name stood for Medicine, but after NEET took over medical admissions nationally, it was updated to represent Pharmacy instead. More recently, following the Telangana government's formal adoption of "TG" as the state's official abbreviation (in place of the earlier "TS"), both the exam and its conducting council were renamed to their current forms — TG EAPCET, administered by TGCHE. Every year, several lakh candidates from Telangana and neighboring states appear for TG EAPCET, competing for seats across government universities, university colleges, and private engineering institutions throughout the state.

TG EAPCET is the sole gateway into the state's engineering education system for the vast majority of aspirants, covering prestigious government-run institutions like JNTU Hyderabad's constituent college and Osmania University College of Engineering (OUCE), alongside more than a hundred private engineering colleges spread across Hyderabad and the state's other districts.

A defining feature of TG EAPCET admissions is the Local Area reservation, which reserves 85% of seats in government and university colleges for candidates classified as "local" to Telangana (broadly, the OU — Osmania University — region, historically linked to the erstwhile Telangana districts), with the remaining 15% open to non-local candidates from any state on an unreserved basis.
Compared to JEE Main, TG EAPCET places significantly greater weight on Mathematics (80 of 160 questions, exactly half the paper), reflecting the exam's historical emphasis on engineering aptitude. The overall difficulty level is generally considered more moderate and NCERT/state-board-aligned than JEE Main, making it accessible to a broader base of Intermediate (Class 12 equivalent) students in Telangana.
Although this guide focuses on the Engineering stream, TG EAPCET also covers Agriculture and Pharmacy streams, each with its own subject combination and paper (e.g., Biology-based papers for certain Agriculture/Pharmacy pathways). These streams are conducted separately, often on different days, from the Engineering stream, though under the same overall TG EAPCET notification and administrative umbrella.
Following the 2014 bifurcation of the undivided state of Andhra Pradesh that created Telangana as a separate state, Telangana began conducting its own independent engineering entrance examination, administered by JNTU Hyderabad on behalf of the state's higher education council. After NEET took over medical admissions nationally, the exam's name was updated to replace "Medicine" with "Pharmacy." More recently, following the Telangana government's formal adoption of "TG" as the state's official abbreviation, the exam and its conducting council were renamed to their current forms — TG EAPCET, conducted by TGCHE via JNTU Hyderabad — serving Engineering, Agriculture, and Pharmacy admissions within Telangana.
Telangana hosts one of India's more extensive networks of engineering colleges relative to its population, a legacy of substantial private investment in technical education since the 1980s and 1990s. TG EAPCET remains the singular gateway mechanism tying this entire ecosystem together, from the oldest government colleges to the newest private institutions.
The exam has been renamed twice in recent years: first when "Medicine" was replaced with "Pharmacy" in its name after NEET took over medical admissions nationally, and again more recently when Telangana officially adopted "TG" in place of its earlier state abbreviation, giving the exam and its conducting council (TGCHE) their current names.
It is organized by TGCHE (Telangana State Council of Higher Education) and conducted on its behalf by JNTU Hyderabad.
Yes, candidates from any state can apply, but only Telangana "local" candidates (as defined by the Presidential Order) are eligible for 85% of government college seats; the remaining 15% is open to all.
